Since this is for displaced Californian's, my question is where are you now, and from what part of CA?
I was bouncing between Ojai, Ventura County, and the Redding/Shasta area. I now live on the Big Island of Hawaii.

Re: Where are you now??
Mon, April 19, 2004 - 9:22 AMWell, if you can't be in Cali, I guess Hawaii isn't too bad! I'm stuck in Pennsylvania for exactly 42 more days, not counting 6 to be spent in LA in two weeks. -

Sun, April 25, 2004 - 10:54 PMMy friend who owns our house in Hawaii is in PA as well. He will be back in Ojai early May. Being on an island, I miss the long wooded mountain roads. -

Sun, May 9, 2004 - 2:39 PMI heard there was an island that only native Hawaiians are allowed on. Is that true? -

Re: Where are you now??
Mon, May 10, 2004 - 3:18 AMHmm... I'm new to the Islands, so I'll answer the best I can. The Big Island is pretty rustic with 2 Volcanos. Mauna Loa, and Mauna Kea. Mauna Loa is active, and I think Mauna Kkea is as well. I do not think the other islands have active volcanos...Mauna Loa is the worlds most active and took out a beautiful beach in the mid 90s. We also have black sand beaches. Again, not sure if the other islands do or not. We have the fewest beaches because of the newness of this island. So.... If you want lots of nature, I hear Kauai is very nice, Maui probably has the best beaches, Oahu has highways and lots of people, but has night life. If you want lots of open space with active volcanos then the Big Island might be best. Hope this helps.
I have not heard of any "Local" only islands. Personaly I hope there is... much has been lost in the ways of traditions. Unlike my reservation experiances, Hawaiians are incredably resourseful and smart and want to do things that will benifit future generations. I left Ojai because it was becoming LA-ified, its hard seeing that same mentality creeping into the island. -

Re: Where are you now??
Mon, July 5, 2004 - 11:55 AMoooh! so i had my first hawaiian experience, traveling through the rich agricultural heartlands of oahu! it was amazing. i pretty much stayed in waikiki - but i got to travel the entire island & experience weathered beach communities, pineapple plantations, sugar cane fields, ferral animals & gorgeous empty beaches. i got to swim with fish & hike diamondhead! it was awesome!
